01 / Motherland Reminiscence
From the artist.
Guardians of Sound depicts a ritual of passing knowledge from one generation to another, guided by the presence of twins. The masks come from the Fang people of Gabon. At the center, a man is dressed in raffia, a material deeply rooted in ceremonial dress, and the djembe evokes communal gathering and initiation. The color beneath them is the color of the earth I remember under my feet as I ran through the streets of Ouidah, Bohicon and Porto-Novo. It is a memory of places expressed through color.
